Although I admire Audubon’s beautiful depictions of birds, I’ve been more interested in them as messengers from our greater natural world, separated from their individual species. I’ve used them in invented narratives, sometimes fanciful, sometimes ominous or sad. By painting preserved birds from the Nature Lab at the Rhode Island School of Design or fallen birds from my own back yard, I’m trying to honor their lives in my own way.
